Pekka Kostiainen is best known as a composer of choral music and the founder of the Musica Choir. He has composed more than a hundred choral works. Pekka Kostiainen has received national and international recognition, for example the honorary doctorate of the University of Jyväskylä in 2004 and the choir director of the year in 2005 appointed by the Finnish Choir Conductors' Association.
