Of Tchaikovsky's entire oeuvre, his 'Symphonies nos. 4,5 & 6', written between 1876 and 1893, occupy a special place. Tchaikovsky described these works as being 'subjectively' inspired and are, in this sense, programmatic - even if he never spoke openly about the programs involved.
